The Maritime Arbitration Commission at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation (MAC)

The Maritime Arbitration Commission at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation (the ‘MAC’) is a recognized arbitral Moscow-based institution with long-running experience in administering international and domestic maritime arbitrations. Most frequently, disputes decided by the MAC tribunals arise out of commercial contracts of marine insurance and chartering. This article follows the history of the MAC, which was first established and earned international recognition in the early period of Soviet history. The article offers an overview of the most significant features of the MAC’s present status, organization and proceedings, especially in the light of the recent arbitration law reform in Russia. The issues of applicable law and composition of the arbitral tribunals are also recognized. Apart from that, the article provides a detailed overview of a case related to fishing heard at the MAC. It also discusses recent trends of maritime arbitration in MAC and challenges it faces nowadays.
